Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia. With 54 recognized sovereign states and territories, Africa's flags often feature pan-African colors (red, green, yellow/gold, and black) that symbolize the struggle for independence, natural resources, and cultural heritage. Many African flags were adopted in the mid-20th century as nations gained independence from colonial powers.
